ACEDHARS ORGANISES WORKSHOP ON HUMAN DRUGS CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT, FINANCIAL LITERACY (posted On: Wednesday 13th of July 2022 09:01:56 PM)
As part of its vision to
build up manpower on quality assurance, standardization of dosages, and reproducibility of herbal preparations, the African Centre of Excellence on
Drugs Herbal and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS) recently organized a three-day workshop
titled ‘Building Entrepreneurship
Capabilities of Drugs & Herbal Medicine Researchers’. The
workshop was specifically for researchers and academics in the space of herbal
medicine. It afforded participants a rare opportunity in enhancing their skills as entrepreneurs. There was an engagement
with stakeholders
in the
Entrepreneurship Ecosystem that exposed participants to the concept of
stakeholders and how stakeholders’ engagement can be effectively managed in a
developing context. The primary case studies of the university-based
entrepreneurship ecosystem in Nigeria and other African countries were also
examined as part of the different
modules taught during the workshop.
The team of participants were in the company of the Director of the Entrepreneurship
and Skill Development Centre, University of Lagos, Professor Sunday Adebisi;
his Deputy, Dr Ayodele Shittu; Centre Leader, ACEDHARS, Dr Omobolanle
Ade-Ademilua, and other notable Faculty members as facilitators. During the workshop, the
participants were also made to understand how opportunities and potentials
within and outside their core research discipline, and the distinguishing feature
between the businessman, market woman and an entrepreneur. Other areas of
interest touched were design thinking, and intellectual property (IP), which
stand out among the noble outcomes of academic entrepreneurship. Some of the learning objectives in the area of
IP include the steps toward starting and registering a business, the possible legal
frameworks for commercialisation and the steps in product commercialisation.Another major area of discussion
was teaching the participants ways to understand the Basics of Financial
Sustainability. It was identified that start-up financing remains an area of
concern limiting the growth and development of research-driven start-ups in the university-based entrepreneurial ecosystem. At the event, Professor Sunday Adebisi
emphasised that there was a need to continue to walk the path of Objective 4 (section -2: Student matters) on page 55 of the Medium Term
Goals of the 25-year strategic plan of the University of Lagos which states “To promote Self-reliance, Entrepreneurship
and Exemplary Leadership skills and capacity in our students”. To this
effect, he averred, the program will make leeway for the participants’ to access employment or create their own entrepreneurial
opportunities in the fourth industrial revolution which conforms to the already
established entrepreneurship drive of the university. After a rigorous exercise and field research work amongst the teams, they were made to pitch their works for
assessment. The teams were Team Yankari Games Reserve, Team Pleasure Park, Team
Obudu Cattle Ranch, Team National War Museum and Team Zuma Rock. The Centre Leader of
ACEDHARS appreciated the participants and the facilitators for their unflinching support of
the event which saw Team Zuma Rock emerge as winners. She urged the
participating members to bring to use the knowledge they have acquired during
the training in order to impact society. The event which was held at the Yaba College of Technology between June 21st
- 23rd, 2022 also witnessed the presentation of certificates
to each of the participating
teams.
